In-custody death at Elmwood Correctional Complex: 12-17-24
On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at approximately 9:09 p.m., deputies assigned to the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas were notified of an unresponsive 30-year-old man in his cell. Deputies and medical staff immediately began life-saving measures by administering CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived.
At 9:25 p.m., the Milpitas Fire Department and Medical Services arrived on the scene and transported the man to a local hospital for further care. Despite efforts to save him, the man was pronounced deceased at approximately 10:08 p.m. while under doctors’ care.
Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the incident, and preliminary findings show no evidence of foul play. The deceased had been booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on November 2, 2024, by the San Jose Police Department for burglary, in addition to numerous outstanding warrants from other counties.
In accordance with standard protocol for in-custody deaths, the Sheriff’s Office is conducting a joint investigation with the District Attorney’s Office, and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Corner’s Office.
