Crime statistics are reported to DOJ in accordance with Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) guidelines. The Department of Justice (DOJ) uses data on reported homicides, rape, robberies, and aggravated assaults to calculate violent crime rates; while property crimes are derived from the number of burglaries, thefts, and vehicle thefts. The overall crime rate is the combination of violent crimes, property crimes, and incidents of arson. It is important to note that crime data from other sources may be categorized differently. The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office provides this detailed information to give the community an overview of the types of crimes and law enforcement activity within the county. The data also includes incidents occurring within our jails, which may introduce variations in crime rates when compared to other cities and jurisdictions.
