Meet the Sheriff
My approach to law enforcement leadership is clear; Respect everyone, respect the profession, and respect yourself - and do so rooted in compassion.
I am deeply honored to serve as your 29th Sheriff, continuing a legacy that dates back more than 130 years when my great-great uncle held this same position. His dedication to justice, accountability, and caring for those in our jail system inspired me as I stepped into this role in 2023.
As your Sheriff, I am committed to upholding the highest standards of law enforcement. The police officer code of conduct begins with, “As a law enforcement officer, my fundamental duty is to serve; to safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all to liberty, equality, and justice.” This commitment to respecting the Constitutional rights of everyone will guide our work.
Respect-based policing is the cornerstone of my leadership approach. Respect everyone, respect the profession, and respect yourself—this is what I communicate to the workforce, ensuring that expectations are clear and grounded in compassion. During my time at the Sheriff's Office, I've seen firsthand the outstanding work of the men and women who proudly serve our community.
Together, we are creating pathways for success within the Sheriff’s Office, prioritizing the well-being of every member, and building educational opportunities for those in the justice system. Our goal is to help individuals graduate from incarceration and reintegrate into society, reducing recidivism and creating a safer community for all.
Our community deserves a Sheriff who is open to collaboration, listens to the people, and leads the organization in alignment with the community’s values. Inspired by my brother Rick's words, “Do justice, love mercy, and serve with humility” (Micah 6:8), I a stand firm to lead by these principles.
We have already begun building a more transparent and accountable agency, improving access to care and rehabilitative programs, and enhancing community safety. But we have much more to accomplish. We strive to build a Sheriff’s Office that sets the standard for 21st-century policing—an agency that other law enforcement organizations want to emulate, and one that our community can take pride in.
I did not run for Sheriff to maintain the status quo. I ran to explore the promise of the future and see what we can achieve together. In one of the most innovative and well-funded regions of the world, we have a unique opportunity to redefine public safety. If we cannot implement this vision, we will have missed a critical chance to lead.
Progress is being made, and I want to reassure you that we are moving forward, ensuring we meet our objectives and surpassing what we can imagine today.
