November 21, 2024

Incarcerated man dies after medical emergency at Elmwood Correctional Facility. On Sunday, November 17, 2024, at approximately 8:46 p.m., deputies at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas were notified of an unresponsive 33-year-old man in one of the dorms. Deputies and medical staff immediately began CPR to provide life-saving assistance until emergency medical personnel arrived.

An incarcerated man with underlying health conditions died while under doctors’ care at Valley Medical Center in San Jose. On Sunday, October 27, 2024, medical staff performed emergency life-saving measures on the man in his hospital room, where he was pronounced deceased at 5:27 p.m.

Auto-Bicyclist Fatal Collision Update

Detectives with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office have concluded that the driver involved in a deadly auto-bicyclist collision back in February was distracted behind the wheel. Mesfin Mekonnen, 64, of Santa Clara, is now facing a felony charge of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
