Sheriff's Protective Services Officer
The Sheriff’s Protective Services Officer (SPSO) classification is distinguished from other law enforcement classifications in that the SPSO is a civilian classification that does not have "peace officer" status, nor do they engage in active law enforcement duties. The SPSOs are under the direction of the Sheriff’s Office and are required to complete a portion of California Penal Code Section 832 training pursuant to PC 831.4 (c) when providing security throughout the County. The SPSOs are responsible for the security of County locations or facilities and assist sworn personnel. They are responsible for deterring criminal acts through their uniformed presence and for observing and reporting suspicious activities on County property. SPSOs apply their knowledge of departmental security techniques, policies, and procedures, and exercise independent judgment. Their duties involve a high degree of public contact and may require them to interact in difficult, often stressful situations with some exposure to physical injury inherent in security work.
