Incarcerated man dies after medical emergency at Elmwood Correctional Facility


On Sunday, November 17, 2024, at approximately 8:46 p.m., deputies at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas were notified of an unresponsive 33-year-old man in one of the dorms. Deputies and medical staff immediately began CPR to provide life-saving assistance until emergency medical personnel arrived.
 

By 9:08 p.m. the Milpitas Fire Department paramedics arrived and transported the man to a local hospital for further care. Despite all efforts, several days later the man died. He was pronounced deceased on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at approximately 3:16 p.m. while in the care of the hospital.
 

Following standard protocol for in-custody deaths, the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, in collaboration with the District Attorney’s Office and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office. Currently, there is no indication of foul play contributing to the man’s death.
 

The man had been booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on November 15, 2024, by Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety on drug-related charges, including being under the influence of drugs at the time of his arrest.
