Cupertino Armed Robberies
Two Suspects Arrested in String of Armed Robberies
On 7/6/2024, at approximately 12:39 A.M., an armed robbery occurred at the 7-11 in the City of Cupertino, located on Mc Clellan Road. Deputies arrived at the 7-11 in a matter of minutes and commenced with a preliminary investigation. It was reported to the deputies that two male adults with masks and gloves stole money from the cash register while brandishing a firearm at the teller. The two suspects left in a getaway vehicle prior to the deputies’ arrival.
Simultaneously, a second robbery occurred at the 7-11 on Homestead Road, in the City of Cupertino. Deputies worked with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and located the getaway vehicle in Redwood City. Deputies initiated a vehicle stop of the vehicle, but the driver of the vehicle refused to yield. A pursuit of the vehicle ensued and continued through several San Mateo County cities and off boarded on Highway 85 near Highway 101.
Deputies deployed spike strips and disabled the suspect vehicle on the Highway 85 on-ramp from Highway 101, where a foot pursuit of the suspects ensued. Deputies successfully apprehended both suspects – one of whom was armed with a loaded forearm. A second firearm was also recovered in the vehicle. Thank you to CHP and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office who assisted us in pursuing the suspects.
The suspects were identified as Yosmar Castro-Cardona (21) and Jose Herrera (24). During the apprehension of Castro-Cardona, deputies prevented him from reaching for an unknown object in his pant pocket. After restraining Castro-Cardona, deputies identified the unknown object as a loaded firearm.
After further investigation, deputies were able to link the suspects to a robbery out of the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department that occurred earlier in the day.
Herrera had two outstanding warrants from an unrelated robbery. Herrera and Castro-Cardona were booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for Attempted Murder, Robbery, Conspiracy, Evading while Driving Recklessly, Violently Resisting Arrest, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, and Carrying a Concealed Firearm.
During the apprehension of Castro-Cardona and Herrera, a deputy sustained minor injuries. “Together, we will work tirelessly to ensure that our streets remain safe and secure for all residents, sending a clear message that crime will not be tolerated in our jurisdiction. Let it be known that we will pursue every lead, utilize every resource, and collaborate with our law enforcement partners to hold accountable those who choose to engage in criminal activities.” – Sheriff Jonsen
