Sheriff reaffirms protest rights, warns against violence and vandalism

“As Sheriff of Santa Clara County, my foremost responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of all our residents, while upholding the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

With ongoing demonstrations, I want to make it clear that we fully respect and support the First Amendment right to free expression and peaceful assembly. This right is a cornerstone of our democracy, and our deputies are committed to protecting those who choose to do so lawfully. Across our nation, we’ve seen powerful examples of people passionately sharing their views on important issues, and we honor that tradition here in Santa Clara County.

At the same time, we have a duty to protect the people and property. While we encourage peaceful protest, any acts of violence, vandalism, or criminal behavior will not be tolerated. We will be closely monitoring protest-related activity to maintain a safe environment for everyone.

We also recognize that this is a deeply emotional time, particularly for our immigrant neighbors who may be feeling increased anxiety or fear. Let me be clear: the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is here to protect all residents, regardless of immigration status. We do not and will not participate in civil immigration enforcement. We will, however, assist any law enforcement agency in addressing criminal activity.
