- How do I apply for a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) License?

- Is there any way I can expedite my application or my way through the CCW process?
No. We do not, nor are we allowed, to expediate anyone, under any circumstances. Everyone is treated equally in our system, per the guidelines and rules of the CCW process.
- May I apply for a CCW even though I’m a non-resident of California?
No. California does not issue licenses to non-residents.
- Is my CCW License valid throughout California?
Yes. Once issued, it is valid throughout California.
- Does a CCW applicant need to be a U.S. citizen to apply for a license?
No. In addition to U.S. citizens, Permanent Legal Resident Aliens are also eligible to apply for a CCW. Those with employment-conditional or temporary visa status are not eligible.
- I applied for a CCW with a specific gun/firearm, but I want to change it to something else. How do I do that?
Once you have applied for a CCW with a specific firearm(s), you must complete the entire application process with at least one (1) of the firearms listed in the original application. YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE FIREARM DURING THE APPLICATION PROCESS. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS. You can change or remove the firearm from your CCW License only after you have already been issued one.
- I sold / got rid of the firearm that I had in my original CCW application, so I don’t have it anymore. Now what do I do?
Unfortunately, if you no longer have the firearm you applied with, you must start over with a new application. There are no exceptions and no refunds to your original application.
- Can I get certified with my firearm before my interview?
No. You must complete your interview, psychological evaluation, and Live Scan, in that order, before you can begin your firearms training.
- What do I need to bring to the interview?
You can bring the following items to verify your identity and proof of residence:
- CA Driver License / CA ID / Real ID
- U.S. Passport
- Water / Garbage / Gas and Electric bill
- Credit card statement
- Bank statement
- Cable / Home internet statement
** Mortgage account statements and Property tax statements are NOT accepted
- Can I go anywhere to get my Live Scan?
No. You can only go to the Sheriff’s Office Locations, which are listed below:

- Do the firearms listed on my CCW have to be registered to me?
Yes. You must be on the record with the California Department of Justice (DOJ) as the registered owner of the firearm.
- Can the firearm listed on my CCW be registered to my spouse or romantic partner?
No. Firearms listed on a CCW License must be owned by the CCW Licensee.
- What is the process and fee for changing a firearm on a license? Is requalification required?
The process for changing or removing a firearm from your current CCW License is called a Modification. This process is only for existing CCW Licensees, not for new CCW applicants.
To make any change or modification to your CCW License (including adding or changing a firearm), you must log into your Permitium account and apply online by selecting, “Modification.” Please read the instructions carefully. Complete the entire application and include the reason behind your modification. If you are adding a firearm, enter all information correctly and carefully.
There is a $15 fee for amendments / modifications.
Applicants must provide Proof of Qualification via certificate & CCW Firearms Proficiency form from one of the department-approved trainers with any new firearm to be included on their CCW License.
- Is CCW Insurance Required?
No. However, we encourage all CCW Licensees to carefully weigh the risks and make the appropriate and applicable decision.
- Can I put a shotgun and/or rifle on my CCW permit?
No. Only handguns are allowed to be used for concealment purposes.
- Are there any restrictions on the firearm I can carry?
Yes.
- “AR Pistol” platforms and similar handgun styles are prohibited.
- The handgun must be capable of being concealed upon a person and the ammunition must comply with State and Federal regulations.
The firearm(s) listed on your CCW application must be associated to you via an AFS check.
- If I have a CCW License, can I carry a firearm magazine which holds greater than 10 rounds?
No. You are only permitted to carry a maximum of a 10-round magazine. As California Firearm Laws can change, it is the responsibility of the CCW License owner (“Licensee”) to be aware of the any changes to the law. As such, Licensees must also ensure that the firearm and magazine adhere to and follow California law.
- Does California recognize CCW Licenses and permits from other states?
No. California does not recognize CCW License and permits from any other states. This means that you cannot carry a concealed weapon in California if you have a CCW license/permit from another state.
- Am I required to tell a peace officer that I am armed?
Yes. A condition for having a CCW License issued by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office requires all CCW licensees to immediately inform any peace officer, upon initial contact, that they are carrying a concealed weapon.
- Can I apply for a CCW if I am a convicted felon?
No. Per California Penal Code 29800(a)(1), it is a felony to be a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
- Do I need to notify the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office (SCCSO) if I am arrested for allegedly being involved in a crime?
Yes. As a CCW Licensee, if you are arrested, you must notify the CCW unit within 10 days, by calling (408) 808-4942.
- What happens if I have a Restraining Order/Protective Order issued against me after I get my CCW License?
Having a Restraining Order-- temporary or permanent, places you on a prohibited list. Due to California Penal Code 26202(a)(3), state and federal law prohibits you from possessing, receiving, owning, or purchasing a firearm. A letter informing you of CCW License suspension will be mailed to you, and you will need to surrender the CCW license.
To reinstate the license, you will need to reapply and resubmit fingerprints to clear the status with our CCW department and the State of California.
