The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is ready to take on the world’s largest and most unique law enforcement relay race—the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay. On April 6, 2025, a team of dedicated deputies will participate in the grueling 120-mile, 20-stage foot race that spans from Baker, California, to Las Vegas, Nevada.

This annual event brings together hundreds of law enforcement teams from around the globe, all competing for the coveted cup trophy in a test of physical endurance, teamwork, and determination. Known for its fierce competition, the Baker to Vegas race is considered a premier event for law enforcement agencies worldwide.

This year, the race will feature a thrilling local rivalry, with deputies from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office facing off against the San Jose Police Department. The two neighboring agencies, each with a proud tradition of excellence, are eager to prove their strength on the demanding desert terrain.

“We’re thrilled to be joining the San Jose Police Department in this challenge and celebrate the spirit of teamwork and collaboration,” said Sheriff Robert Jonsen. “I’ll be running with our team, and together, we’re ready to give it our all while supporting one another every step of the way. My hope is we all come home with victory mugs.”

The race is more than just a test of speed—it’s about collaboration and grit. With 20 total legs, each team member will run a segment of the course, relying on seamless coordination and mutual support to conquer the distance.

“I’m proud to be out there running with the San Jose team again this year,” said San Jose Police Department Assistant Chief Brian Shab. “The camaraderie and team spirit make this race something truly special. We’ve been fortunate to place first and second the past two years, and I’m excited to be part of the journey again.”

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office is also joining the race.

“Our office team — some star runners and other star cheerleaders — are all looking forward to a happy and healthy race to foster comradery, health, and sportsmanship,” Chief Assistant District Attorney Jay Boyarsky said.

The Baker to Vegas Challenge has become a symbol resilience among law enforcement officers. It’s a chance for officers to bond with their peers while engaging in spirited competition that celebrates the strength and dedication required in law enforcement.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the determination of our Sheriff’s Office personnel as they compete in this grueling relay,” Sheriff Jonsen said.

As the big day approaches, the Sheriff’s Office is rallying behind its team, fully supporting the deputies as they train and prepare for the upcoming challenge.
