Overview
Assistant Sheriff Thomas Duran began his law enforcement career in 2001, as a Correctional Officer for the Santa Clara County Department of Corrections, Academy Class #35. Upon completion of training, Assistant Sheriff Duran was assigned to the Main Jail Facility where he remained until 2008. While at the Main Jail, he was assigned to both Main Jail North and Main Jail South, and afforded opportunities to work as a Jail Training Officer, Intake/Booking, Security Enhancement Training Team (SETT), and an Emergency Response Team (ERT) member, and eventually the ERT Leader.
In 2008, he was assigned to the Support Services Division as a Classification Deputy. In 2012, Duran was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and transferred to the Elmwood Facility. He later returned to the Main Jail as a Team Sergeant and held the collateral assignment of ERT Sergeant. In 2015, he was transferred to the Classification Unit. In 2016, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and would later be assigned as the Assistant Division Commander of the Support Services Division.
In 2019, Assistant Sheriff Duran was promoted to the rank of Captain and remained in the Support Services Division. In 2022, he was transferred to the Administrative Services Division, and in 2023 he assumed command of the newly created Professional Standards and Compliance Division. During his time as a Captain, he worked with County Counsel and Jail Administration to help implement new procedures and mandates outlined by remedial plans, reforms, and monitors.
When not dedicating himself to the agency, Assistant Sheriff Duran enjoys spending quality time with his family. He also likes working out and competing in half marathons in his spare time.
