Misinformation about raids triggers panic among immigrant communities

Earlier this month, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office served two search warrants related to retail theft in East San Jose, which sparked false claims that our agency was collaborating with immigration agents to conduct raids.
Rumors, which quickly spread on social media, created panic and concern among immigrant communities in Santa Clara County and throughout the Bay Area.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office has a primary responsibility to protect all residents, regardless of immigration status. We do not inquire about a person's immigration status and will not cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain individuals solely for immigration enforcement.
Sheriff Robert Jonsen emphasized the Sheriff’s Office’s focus on community safety, stating, “We are deeply committed to creating a secure and welcoming environment for every resident.”
Jonsen added, “I understand that the fear of immigration enforcement can hinder trust and cooperation with local law enforcement.”
The Sheriff’s Office Media Relations Unit is committed to addressing misinformation and immediately posted updates on social media explaining ICE was not involved in our investigations targeting organized retail theft.
In line with California Senate Bill 54, which limits cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, local law enforcement in Santa Clara County will not assist with ICE actions unless there is a serious criminal threat.
As a sanctuary jurisdiction, we ensure that those in our custody are not subjected to ICE actions.
“We want all residents to feel comfortable reporting crimes, seeking assistance, or interacting with our office without the fear of immigration-related repercussions,” Jonsen said. “Our policies are designed to protect the well-being of our community, and we remain steadfast in upholding these values.”
