In response to a surge in auto thefts involving Hyundai vehicles nationwide, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office is distributing 100 free steering wheel locks to eligible Hyundai owners as part of a proactive crime prevention effort.

The locks, provided by Hyundai Motor Company, are now available at the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, located at 55 W. Younger Ave. in San Jose, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will continue until they’re gone.

This initiative follows an increase in thefts of certain Hyundai models, which lack engine immobilizers found in most newer vehicles. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, thefts of Hyundai vehicles have risen across the country by more than 1,000% since 2020. Officials attribute the rise to viral social media videos showing how to exploit security vulnerability.

“In Santa Clara County, we’re trying to put a dent in motor vehicle theft.” Sheriff Bob Jonsen said. “These steering wheel locks offer a simple but effective way for residents to deter theft and protect their vehicles.”

More than 800 vehicle thefts were reported in the Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction in 2023 through 2024. The neighbors of Alum Rock and Burbank have reported the highest number of incidents. Overall, auto theft reports rose from 331 in 2023 to 342 last year in those unincorporated areas.

The steering wheel locks are intended as a temporary deterrent until Hyundai owners can receive a permanent software update or repair. Owners are encouraged to contact their local Hyundai dealership to learn whether their vehicle qualifies for an upgrade.

To receive a free steering wheel lock, Hyundai owners must:

  • Present valid proof of vehicle registration
  • Be a resident of Santa Clara County
  • Arrive early, as devices are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis

The program reflects the Sheriff’s Office’s continued commitment to public safety, crime prevention, and community outreach.
