Deputies save man suffering from heart attack

Two Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies used their medical training to quickly save a man’s life on September 9, 2024, in South County.

Deputy Marilao and Deputy Le Beau were initially dispatched at 4:17 a.m. Monday to a home in Gilroy where a 50-year-old man collapsed and appeared to be suffering a sudden heart attack.

A family member immediately noticed the man wasn’t breathing and began CPR. The deputies were first to arrive, before emergency medical technicians.

Deputy Le Beau took over CPR while Deputy Marilao set-up an AED, which are carried in all patrol vehicles. The AED instructed deputies to ‘shock’ the victim. Once used, the man was instantly revived.

The victim was conscious and breathing as the Gilroy Fire Department arrived and he was placed inside an ambulance. The deputies’ heroic actions saved the victim's life.

For years, our deputies have been supplied with AEDs for exactly this kind of emergency. This was just one of many calls where time is critical.

The Sheriff’s Office is thankful that lifesaving tools and our dedicated personnel can protect Santa Clara County residents – everyday.
