In-Custody Death Investigation - 03-11-2023
Jail Suicide
On 11/30/2022, a 44-year-old man was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for several counts of Lewd and Lascivious Acts with a Minor, stemming from a San Jose Police Department Investigation.
On 3/11/2023 at approximately 8:22 AM, deputies assigned to the Main Jail in San Jose were conducting welfare checks on the medical unit floor. Deputies found the 44-year-old man unresponsive in his cell. Deputies and medical staff immediately performed life-saving measures on the justice-involved individual by administering Narcan and CPR.
At approximately 8:33 AM, San Jose Fire Department Engine #7 and Paramedics arrived on scene and pronounced the man deceased at 8:36 AM. Sheriff's Office Detectives responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. Preliminary indications are suicide, and there were no signs of foul-play. The inmate was housed alone in a single cell at the time of the incident.
The Sheriff’s Office is following standard protocol for an in-custody death by conducting a joint investigation among the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office. The name of the deceased is being withheld until notification of next of kin.
