TYPE OF INCIDENT: In-Custody Death Investigation
LOCATION: Elmwood Correctional Facility (701 S. Abel Street, Milpitas, CA)
CASE NUMBER: 23-151-0351J

On 05/31/2023 at 11:12AM, deputies assigned to the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas located an unresponsive 57-year-old man in his cell at the Elmwood Correctional Facility - Dorm M5. Deputies and medical staff immediately performed life-saving measures on the individual by administering CPR until medical personnel arrived.

At 11:22AM, Milpitas Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene and transported the man to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 5:35PM. The inmate was housed alone at the time of the incident. Sheriff's Office Detectives responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. Preliminary information shows no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances leading to the death.

The decedent was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on 05/28/2023 for several drug possession charges, stemming from a Los Gatos Police Department Investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office is following standard protocol for an in-custody death by conducting a joint investigation among the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office. The name of the deceased is being withheld until notification of next of kin.
