In-Custody Death Investigation - 04-06-2024
On 4/06/2024, at approximately 4:13 A.M., deputies assigned to the Main Jail Facility in San Jose, located an unresponsive 27-year-old man in his assigned cell. Deputies and medical staff immediately performed life saving measures on the individual by administering CPR until medical personnel arrived.
At 4:27 A.M., the San Jose Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services arrived and pronounced the male adult deceased at 4:40 A.M. The decedent was housed alone at the time of the incident. Sheriff’s Office Detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. Preliminary information showed no evidence of foul play leading to the death.
The decedent was booked in the Santa Clara County Main Jail on 10/20/2023 for P.C. 664/211 – Attempted Robbery, P.C. 664/459(a) – Attempted Burglary, and P.C. 594(a) – Vandalism.
The Sheriff’s Office is following standard protocol for an in-custody death by conducting a joint investigation among the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office. The Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. The name of the decedent is being withheld until notification of next of kin.
