In-Custody Death Investigation - 02-04-2024

On 2/4/2024, at approximately 10:28 A.M., deputies assigned to the Main Jail Facility in San Jose located an unresponsive 59-year-old man in his cell at the Main Jail Facility. Deputies and medical staff immediately performed life-saving measures on the individual by administrating CPR until medical personnel arrived.

At 10:42 A.M., the San Jose Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene and transported the adult male to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 11:24 A.M. The decedent was housed alone at the time of the incident. Sheriff’s Office Detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. Preliminary information showed no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances leading to the death.

The decedent was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on 1/6/2024 for a violation of Post Release Community Supervision by the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.

The Sheriff’s Office is following standard protocol for an in-custody death by conducting a joint investigation among the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office. The name of the decedent is being withheld until notification to next of kin.
